Lunch in the North End - Neptune Oyster and Modern Pastry - Boston, MA

My family has long been fans of Legal Seafoods.  But when I knew I was going to spend two weeks in Boston this summer, I started looking around for some new and different dining options and I stumbled on Neptune Oyster.   Known for its raw bar, chowder, lobster roll and long lines we didn't actually get a chance to try it this summer, but when I was back in Boston after Thanksgiving, it seemed like a great opportunity.

We arrived shortly after they opened and ended up with a 45 minute wait for a party of 6. Fortunately, the area is pleasant to wander and they'll call when your table is ready.  Also, there is no room to wait inside, it really is a tiny place.

I resisted the urge to buy new Christmas tree ornaments and soon enough, it was time to eat.  I was excited about the raw bar, since I was curious to try some east coast oysters.  So far I've only eaten west coast varieties.  Not knowing any better, I chose the first three on the list, Wellfleet, Island Creek, and Katama Bay.  I found them to be much brinier and maybe a bit sweeter and bigger than the ones I've had so far.  I also ordered the clam chowder.  It was good and creamy, but The Sail Loft is still my most favorite.

And of course, how can you go to the North End and NOT get cannoli...?  So we walked over to Modern Pastry, which has an amazing looking pastry case, but the real gem is the filled to order cannoli.  It really doesn't get much better than the crunchy shell with the creamy ricotta filling.  A very pleasant end to a great lunch.
